For Good or Bad – Amazon’s New Referral Service Launching Soon

It seems like big Internet companies are putting their digital hands in as many pies as possible, and massive e-commerce business Amazon is no exception.

Amazon will soon be launching “Amazon Local Services” in 15 cities. It’s a referral listing service for all kinds of in-home and in-store service providers such as electricians, plumbers, and auto mechanics.

However, businesses hoping to list with Amazon can expect to pay 15 to 20 percent of their revenue earned for the referrals, which is considered a service fee. Other big companies like Google and Facebook may launch their own versions, along with several others seeking part of the pie.

Doesn’t Angie’s List already have this pretty much covered? While referral services can make service providers more accessible to the consumer, I think Amazon is venturing into unnecessary territory with this one. Time will tell.
