This small town produces 500% more green energy than it needs

In the small town of Wildpoldsried in southern Bavaria, Germany, an energy revolution has occurred. Through projects largely funded by government subsidies, the town’s 2,600 residents are swimming in green energy – 500 percent more than what they can use.

The extra energy posed a problem for the local utility company, but through an experimental management system using sensors, the grid could be balanced. Homeowners with their own solar panels are also able to sell their extra energy back to the utility company, resulting in benefits for everyone.
