‘Blue energy’ harnesses power from salt water

Blow over wind power, and solar panels can take the night off – there’s a new blue energy in town!

Amsterdam researchers are exploring a renewable energy source that generates power via osmotic energy, which involves harnessing the energy created as ions move between salt and fresh water as a natural battery.

The new test facility is a step toward improving the technology, with a goal of making commercial energy plants a reality in the 2020s.
